「撲克牌」命名源自英文的poker，為美國普遍流行的休閒娛樂。一般民眾玩撲克牌打發時間，賭場有許多由撲克牌延伸的博奕遊戲，在各地更有無數大大小小撲克牌比賽，由此可知打撲克牌為美國人不可或缺的一部分。因此牌桌上的專業術語逐漸融入美國人一般對話中，成為日常用語，有些甚至連美國年輕人都不知道源自於撲克牌呢！

 Poker Face 撲克臉                                                                                                                             

要成為撲克牌高手，第一步要學會擺出不動聲色的Poker Face(撲克臉)，讓對方猜不透手中的牌，不能因為拿到好牌而喜形於色，也不能因一手爛牌而神情黯淡。因此Poker face逐漸廣泛用來形容喜怒哀樂不形於色的人。

Close to your vest 謹慎小心                                                                                                             


拿到牌之後，除了要擺張讓人猜不透的Poker face之外，還要記得Holding your cards close to your vest，也就是要把牌放在靠胸口的地方，免得被別人偷看到。所以Close to the vest就慢慢衍伸為一個人非常小心不讓別人知道他在幹什麼，也可以形容一個人謹慎小心，保守秘密。

Have an ace in the hole 留一手                                                                                                     

在玩撲克牌時，我們都知道，最大的牌就是ace。有了ace，基本上就是勝券在握囉！所以在玩的時候，當然不會輕易的就把ace打出來。所以have an ace in the hole或是have a card up your sleeve，就是在形容當你手中有了王牌，不到最後關頭不使出來的絕招。而這樣的句子也被沿用至今，當我們在形容自己「留一手」以備不時之需時，就可以說I have an ace in the hole，也就是成語「錦囊妙計」的意思。

         Lily always has an ace in the hole, so whenever she faced up with a problem,

Within an ace of 差一點點                                                                                                                

但如果沒有拿到王牌ace怎麼辦呢？很多時候拿到牌，總是會想著：just within an ace of winning! 如果再拿到一張王牌，就會得到勝利了！但往往總是只差一點，所以within an ace of也就是在形容幾乎，差一點點，而within an ace of winning也就是口語常使用的功虧一簣囉！

Lay all the cards on the table 全盤托出                                                                                      

當牌局進行到最後，大家都紛紛把手上的牌lay all cards on the table，換句話說就是大家都紛紛攤牌囉！也就是亮出底細，坦誠相見。除了用lay all cards on the table之外，showdown也有同樣的意思。據說這個用語沿用至今已經四百多年了！而到現在，我們都用此片語來形容全盤托出、毫無保留地說出一切。
